Why I Read

Why wouldn’t you read?
Why would you rather spend your day in front of a mind-frying television with other dunderheads?
You could be spending quality time with a book buddy, visiting faraway places and acquainting yourself with interesting people who live lives completely different than your own. Now doesn’t that sound swell?
Reading is so much greater than TV. In your head you can personalize the characters and the places, making them your own, instead of getting the same stale images that everyone else receives. Plus, when watching TV you’re usually watching reruns of the same tired show that isn’t of any use to you (i.e. Adventure Time). Every time you read a book, or even reread it, you pick up more of the tiny details that make the plot events unique.  When you read, you have better problem solving skills—what do you think you’re doing when you’re guessing the plot? –and your achieving better morals of right and wrong –it’s that moment when you tell the character that they shouldn’t have made that choice. When you read, your vocabulary expands. You learn how to frame words in quotations. You learn how to create suspense when telling a story. You learn what makes a good subject for your writing.
Reading is that comfy t-shirt that you never grown out of. The t-shirt that’s the first worn after laundry day. The t-shirt that never goes out of style. The one that you wear with a million different outfits.
Reading is the one friend that’s always there for you. Night and day. Through thick and thin… and they don’t mind keeping you company when you’re sick with the flu.

  1. The T-shirt metaphor is fun. I also like the idea you explain of how we also make moral choices along with the characters.

    What is Adventure Time?

  2. Book Buddy:) I'm going to call it that now! i love that title. I completely agree with you on not being able to personalize TV actors/actresses/characters. I love bing able to ccome up with my OWN image of whatever characters are in my book.

Oh- and Mr. Coates, Adventure Time is a weird cartoon TV show that makes no sense.
